What this is
autax is a small set of free Australian tax tools, in English and Chinese. The scope is deliberately narrow: get the question "am I an Australian tax resident" right, and then show what that status actually costs or saves you.
Why build another one
I read through the existing English and Chinese explanations first. The problems clustered in three places:
- The four tests presented as a flowchart. They are alternatives — passing any one is enough. Writing it as "check 183 days first, then move on" produces wrong answers in both directions.
- Two kinds of abode, conflated. The 183-day test turns on usual place of abode; the domicile test turns on permanent place of abode, a higher bar. Merging them into one question gets both lanes wrong.
- Verdicts with no sensitivity. For anyone near the line, the useful information is how far they are from the answer flipping. An article cannot show that; a tool can.
Where the numbers come from
Every rate, threshold and rule is checked line by line against ATO guidance, and every page footer lists its sources. Pages state the financial year they apply to — tax information without a year stamp is not worth trusting, because the Australian rate schedule has been moving (the first resident bracket was 16% in 2024–25 and is 15% from 2026–27).
Review cadence: a full re-check at the start of each financial year on 1 July, plus immediate updates whenever legislation changes.
What this site does not do
- No tax advice. The resides and domicile tests are findings of fact that vary case by case, and the ATO makes the determination.
- No data collection. Every calculation runs in your own browser; none of the values you enter leave your device. See the privacy policy.
- No unlegislated rules. The residency framework proposed in 2021 has never passed, and nothing here applies it.
- No migration advice. Tax residency and visa status are separate regimes; this site only covers the first.
